Book Blogger Beginner

Image
This past quarter, I began blogging about books with my students. I have found that I immensely enjoy writing about books and the craziness of the worlds I pretend to live in throughout the duration of a book. I've enjoyed seeing my students' excitement as they have an outlet and tool to discuss their book and their personal thoughts on the events happening. I have been blogging right along with my students about the books I've been reading, but I have had to keep it "student-friendly" with my thoughts and the format. I loved this, but I needed something of my own. From this, I have decided to begin my own (personal) blog about books and reading. I want a format to discuss the books I have read and to share my passion for literature with other people. I love sharing my passion with my students and getting them excited about reading. However, I want to spread that passion beyond the classroom.  I am known to many of my friends as the book nerd. I collect books

Holiday Wish List 2017

I saw one of my friends doing this and LOVED the idea. It just looked like so much fun to put together and find fun reading things to wish for. These items are just "dreams", but a girl can dream, right... :) First, let's start with my favorite things ever....BOOKS! Dear Martin by: Nic Stone If Angie Thomas, author of The Hate U Give, says it's a "must read", it must be a "must read"! Things I'm Seeing Without You by: Peter Bognanni I'm a sucker for a heart-wrenching contemporary young adult novel! It sounds really good and has awesome ratings! The Sun and Her Flowers by: Rupi Kaur I sincerely enjoyed and quickly devoured Milk and Honey after finding it on Amazon Prime Reading for free. I downloaded it just because it was there to read, but I am so glad I read it. I walked away from it feeling empowered and would love to learn more from this talented author. The Whole Thing Together by: Ann Brash

Letting Ana Go

Warning to anyone who has or knows someone that has been affected by anorexia.  Potential triggers ahead... I have four books from this "Anonymous" series. I picked it up to read because it was short and I needed a quick read. Okay, I had no idea what emotional battle I was in for. This is heart-wrenching read dealing with the struggles of a high school girl and anorexia. I enjoyed the book. I gave it four stars. It let me into a world that is difficult for those who have never suffered the disease themselves find difficult to understand. This book helped me to wrap my brain around the difficulties of not only the person with the disease but also those around them.  The book is told in the format of a high-school girl's diary. The girl, Ana, goes from just watching what she is eating for cross-country to calorie-counting, obsessive compulsive. If I had to guess, this is a realistic account of anorexia. However, I realize that I am no expert on the disease, but it d

Strong Looks Better Naked

So let me start by saying that I am a huge Khloe fan. Out of all the Kardashian sisters, Khloe is my favorite with Kourtney coming up as a close second. My fiance bought me this book for a few reasons. One reason is that I am Khloe fan, but I also wanted to know more. I wanted to know more about her split from Lamar and how she lost so much weight and became even more gorgeous. I wanted to know about Bruce's transition to becoming Caitlyn and how that affected her... Now, I will also be honest that this book took me over a year to finish. Not because it wasn't good, but because it somehow always was placed on the backburner for my "fun" books. I read this book when I needed a pick-me-up. The book was mostly meant to inspire other women to be more positive and to explain how she went about learning to love working out. The book inspired me in some aspects to get into shape, but in other aspects, it was just guilty pleasure entertainment. If I didn't love Kee

Alex & Eliza: A Love Story

Image
As a fellow Hamilton Musical Lover, when I heard that this book was coming out, I was ecstatic! I pre-ordered this book months before it came out and couldn't wait for the day it arrived on my doorstep (see previous blog post about this book). What I expected out of this book and what I got were completely different. I based my thoughts off of the part of the title that said, "A Love Story". I felt that the majority of the book was history-based and was about their lives prior to being together. I wanted to know more about their married life together.  It just felt long. It was one of those books that I had to force myself to actually sit down and read instead of one that I couldn't put down. I found myself skimming often times hoping that I would get to a good part or finish it sooner, but no avail. Alex and Eliza's official wedding and time that they are together doesn't come until the second to last chapter. Up until that point, the story mostly fol

A List of Cages

Image
I finished A List of Cages a few days ago and have needed some time to process what I read. I was not prepared for the emotional toll this book took on me (I read it as a "fun" book, forewarning, it's not a "fun" book) nor for the overwhelmingly lasting feelings it left me with. I gave this book 5 stars on Goodreads. Not because it was the best book I ever read, but because of the things it made me feel and because of how many times I had to take a second while reading to process what I just read. I cry easily, always have, but this book didn't just make me cry...I sobbed...uncontrollable, ugly, hysterical sobs. I cannot recall the last time a book did that to me.  Maybe it's because of my past and maybe it's because I imagined the main character as some of my students, but this book was heart-wrenching.  A List of Cages reminded me that my own students are carrying around this iceberg with them. Most of these students will only show me the very t

Inexcusable

Image
UGHHHH!! Before I get too deep into this, I have to admit that I HATED this book. I gave it 2 stars on Goodreads and that was pretty generous. I found myself skimming through pages quite often and found myself dreading reading it (but also kind of just wanting to read it all the time to get it over with).  Inexcusable caused me to be internally conflicted with whether or not I liked the protagonist, Keir. The book starts off with, "The way it looks is not the way it is...And I don't feel guilty. That is, I don't feel like I am guilty. But I sure as hell feel sorry" (1). OKAY PEOPLE, let's just start off with the fact that he raped a girl!! I understand that he said he was sorry, but saying you're sorry after an action like that is hardly forgivable. My issue with Keir right-off the bat was that he DIDN'T FEEL GUILTY! How can he not feel guilty? I guess that I was not digging the book right away because I felt so angry towards him for claiming he was

HOW LUCKY ARE WE TO BE ALIVE RIGHT NOW?!!! ALEX & ELIZA COMES OUT TODAY!

I will never be satisified until I read this book... hahahah if you are a Hamilton fanatic, like myself, you will understand the joke. Okay, so I fully realize that I am totally late to board onto this Hamilton Musical hype-train, but here I am boarding!! Actually, I boarded that train about a month ago when I downloaded the soundtrack and basically have not stopped listening to it since. I have become OBSESSED! My brain is full of Hamilton lyrics... Now, to my point. Today, when I get home, I will have delivered  ALEX & ELIZA: A LOVE STORY by: MELISSA DE LA CRUZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since boarding the obsession Hamilton train, I have been pumped for this book to finally reach my doorstep. I cannot wait to read the story of these two amazing people, Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth (Schuyler) Hamilton, and to find out more about their background and their love story. (and I'm not willing to wait for it) Melissa de la Cruz is bringing to life the story
